Listening is an art

Everyone has a story to tell. However, not everyone may be willing to listen. Sometimes, we are amaze in an unpleasant way. Over the fact that we have not been paying attention to the one speaking to us.

At some point along the story, our mind has wandered off, and we only drift back to reality when suddenly asked, “Are you still listening?”

Benefits of listening

That would be most unfortunate, since next to our visual skills, our ability to listen allows us to reap various benefits. If we listen to our mentor as he shares with us useful thoughts on life, we become good apprentices.

We listen to our professor as he lectures about the day’s lesson, we become good students. If we listen to our boss as he explains the rationale of the company’s recent policy, we become good employees.

We listen to our parents as they advise us regarding career choices, we become good sons/daughters. If we listen to a friend in dire need of unloading his troubles, we become good friends.

In short, listening is vital in developing good human relationships.

To maximize our listening capability, here are a few tips

Focus

It is but a single word, but its message conveys far more. Being focused means paying attention, and a lot of it at that. It means temporarily forgetting about other matters of consequence and lending a few minutes of your time to hear someone speak his mind out.

Means giving interest to whatever it is that the speaker might want to say. It is taking his words seriously into consideration in whatever decision we are to make.

It is placing his story in the context of his emotions, and trying to understand him within the events occurring in his life.

Watch out for non-verbal cues

The message need not always lie on the words, but also in movements that the speaker makes. If we also pay good attention to the speaker’s eyes, facial expressions, and gestures, we will be able to receive the message in totality.

Moreover, if the speaker realizes that we are sincerely listening, we are boosting his confidence.

Be sensitive

A good measure of sensitivity is also essential to maintain enthusiasm in the part of the person speaking. If the person is at the peak of his emotions, do not interrupt.

After all, if someone is extremely angry or anguished, it will be a form of catharsis to remain patient until he has calmed down. Unless the person is already causing bodily harm, it will do him well to let him be purged of his bad feelings.

Show unconditional openness

We may not always agree with what someone has to say, but being there to listen may be the least we can offer. While we may have different opinions about several issues, keeping our horizons wide is a healthy attitude.

 

With these perspectives in listening, we become open to a world of unlimited learning and diverse experiences.

Don’t deprive yourself with enough rest and sleep

Having enough sleep does not condone laziness; oversleeping does. So don’t feel guilty resting or sleeping as long as it is not overdone. You need it badly to keep you revitalized from the tiresome demand of work.

Take time to relax

Breathe deeply if you must. Keep your thoughts organized before acting on them. Keep away from stress and anxiety. It may be impossible to completely eliminate stress since it is part of our challenging generation, but try to keep it down as much as possible.

Stress may bring your memory into its inefficient level. Avoid the habit of saying to yourself that you might forget things, because you’re more likely to if you do. This just builds your anxiety level up to its panic mode.

Stay positive, creative, and energetic

Your memory needs to be within a circle of various things. Things that come in various shapes, sizes, and colors can motivate your creativity. This is a positive way of discovering your surroundings in all its variations and diversities.

Avoid being enclosed within the four walls of your room just like you’re a prisoner. The only time is when you have to rest or sleep. Don’t be a couch potato. There’s a very exciting world out there waiting to improve your memory.

The very best way to improve your memory is between infancy and adolescent

As we grow old, memory starts to fail. But a strong memory that we can develop during the prime years of our lives will definitely enhance us to be good thinkers.

It is very doable by continuously exercising our memory through reading and other cognitive activities like the habit of solving crossword puzzles. The more you do these, the better memory retention can develop.

Other factors of poor memory retention

As far as health is concerned, high blood pressure can lead to stroke and heart ailments. It also results to poor memory retention. Memory function declines when blood pressure is high.

Researchers have observed that people with normal blood pressure, especially at midlife, have a higher cognitive function. Concentration, decision-making, and remembering functions falter as a result of high blood pressure.

What is healthy for the body is likewise healthy for the memory.

A vital part in brain’s function

Keeping the memory in good condition is a vital part of the brain’s function. Every now and then, our actions greatly depend on a lot of information we retrieve from our memory bank.

Such information can either be short term or long term. Short term can be a specific tasks we have to do. While long-term memory can be the ability to drive a car or repeat instructions from a book. Long term may come spontaneously without too much effort when the need arises. Short-term memory requires recalling information from the accumulation of things stored in our memory.

This is why you need to keep your memory in great shape to achieve efficiency in your daily endeavors

Keep your attention focus on the information you need to store in your memory bank

Even with distractions around you, stay focused on the subject. The more concentrated you are on the information, the better the chances of retaining it in your memory.

Utilize the most ideal sense or senses when gathering the information

This what we call acuity in sensing our environment. Be aware of the color or details of a picture, or the particular sound or smell of the thing involved. All our bodily senses are attune to collect information depending on the circumstance at hand.

Our sense of vision may be the most used in gathering information. Then our senses of hearing, smell, taste, and touch are equally important and helpful in remembering things, situations, and information about something or someone.

Write down the information

It works best when you’re not sure that the information you are about to remember will retain by your brain. It proves effective especially in gathering very long and tedious information like lecture notes or a personal interview.

Just be sure you don’t forget that you have a note at hand; and of course, don’t misplace the note.

Maintain a balance diet

A well-proportioned diet will result to a conditioned memory. Oily and sweet foods may cloud the memory. If you cannot completely eliminate a bad diet, gradually cut down your intake of these memory-inhibiting foods.

Doing it gradually cushions the effect of withdrawal symptoms and you’ll get adjusted to the new lifestyle you are creating. This is not only beneficial to the memory, but we can say you’re on your way to a healthy life.

Drinking lots of water brings lots of advantages to your overall health, and memory is not an exception.

What’s your “water slide”? I bet you have one, or many. We all do. What fear, if you conquered it, would allow you to have a bit more fun, experience greater success, or live life a bit more fully?

Some fears feel bigger to conquer than others. My water slide fear may not seem like the biggest fear one can have.

Having it causes me to isolate myself from the rest of my family. It even keep me from having MORE fun, joy and exhilaration in my life.

The moral lesson

Conquering your fears, one by one, builds confidence and increases your quality of life. Don’t let your fears hold you back from living the life you wish you were living.

  2. Declare you are going to conquer the fear
  3. Expect to feel anxious, awkward and scared
  4. Consider copying a style you like until you find your own style
  5. Focus your attention

  9. Remind yourself to keep breathing
  10. Pat yourself on the back when it’s over
  11. Notice how much easier it gets

When you have time, take a personal inventory of the fears keeping you from living the life you want. Then make a commitment and challenge yourself to face and conquer one them that’s been holding you back.

Tips To Discover Your Dream (Part 1 of 2)

 

How to discover your dream. You know how? Let me ask a question. It is the most important question I can ask. I wonder if you could provide me with an answer within 10 seconds. Most people cannot.

Here it is:

What, exactly, do you want to do with your life?

A complete description of how you want to live your life including the most important goal you’d like to achieve. So answers like “make money”, “live in a big house”, or “meet someone special” have no place here.

Such vague, non-specific answers are given by most people. It is a sure sign that they haven’t identified what they really want to do with their lives.

The reason why it is so important to know the answer – in detail – to the question is because the answer reveals your dream.

Your dream is unique to you, and it represents something very important to your happiness and growth as a person. It is an expression of the real you and gives enormous meaning and purpose to your life.

So how do you know what your dream is? Many people say to me “If only I knew what I really wanted”.

If this applies to you, then here’s my top tips to identify your dream:

  1. Take the time to think seriously about what you want to do with your life. Ask yourself “How would I truly want to spend everyday if I could choose freely”. This is serious time and you should spend at least an hour everyday working out the answers to this question.
  2. On a sheet of paper, write down all the things you really enjoy doing and have a passion for. Write down all of the wonderful things you’d like to try too. For example, my list contains: working with computers, writing, motivating others to succeed, music, cooking, travel, history, the arts, farming.
  3. On another sheet of paper, write down all of the things you definitely DON’T want in your life. This is a great technique and brings clarity. For example, on my list, I have: No repetitive work, no bosses, no 9-5, no outdoor tasks, no relationships, no mysticism, no routines. Be honest with this. If you don’t like doing something, write it down. Duty has no role here; this is for you. If you don’t like doing something, write it down.
