Developing Patience

Virtues of Patience

Webster’s defines be patient as bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint, or being steadfast despite opposition, difficulty or adversity. I believe this why patience is called a virtue.

It is little practiced, but much needed. At the first sign of difficulty, many jump to an easier, smoother path, hoping to avoid the pain and suffering that is necessary on the road to personal growth.

But it is only by taking this rough road do we gain the experience necessary to develop our character. Impatience robs us of these types of life experiences. How would your world be different if you practiced more patience?

Patience is the ability to hang on when everyone else has given up. It is ability to release your need for immediate gratification and wait for the things to come in their own time frame.

Patience overcomes criticism and intolerance. It develops committed relationships in marriage, family, church, community and career.

Many a great leader have displayed patience by looking before they leaped, thinking before they acted, and considering before they decided. Indeed, it is the mark of maturity.

How Do We Develop More Patience?

First, realize that no one is perfect, including yourself. Accept yourself and others, imperfections and all. Everyone is struggling with their own set of fears, weaknesses, obstacles and crises.

We are all on the road of personal growth together and can help each other by showing more patience and kindness to each other.

Second, develop a consistent philosophy of life based upon a value system you believe in. Then when you are confronted with a situation, you can make your choice based upon the value system rather than an instant gratification response.

With every choice is a consequence. Do you act now and settle? Or do you wait to get the result you truly desire?

Third, change your perspective on the past, present and the future. Stop dwelling on your mistakes and failures. They cannot be changed. Instead, focus and what you can do now to make a difference.

Life is a blessing and each day should be lived as if it were your last. Start fresh everyday and remember the future comes one day at a time. What can you do today to change the results you have in the future?

Fourth, confront your fears rather than avoid them. Do the thing you fear the most and the fear will go away. “That which we persist in doing becomes easier to do, not that the nature of the thing has changed, but our ability to do it has increased.”

By doing more, it becomes easier, and when it becomes easier it becomes fun rather than stressful.

Finally, realize that all things come to those who wait. The Universe, the infinite force that connects us all, will bring the people who can help, the answers you may need, the tools and resources you are looking for when you need them.

Just be Patient

You must have faith and be patient and believe in your goals, realizing that they will often not be accomplished according to your original plans.

Circumstances change. People change. Things change. Let go of your anxiety, disbelief and doubt about achieving your goal. Know that The Universe is constantly supporting you and will always help you achieve the things you desire. Just be patient!

The Mind-Set of a Leader

Understanding that becoming a leader means we will actually have to change how we act. Too often than not, people who are promoted to their leadership position miss that very point… and the failure to do so probably trips up careers more than any other reason.

The fact is, being a leader changes everything.

Before we are a leader, success is all about growing ourselves. Our individual contributions, it is about us raising our hand and us getting called on and us delivering the right answer.

When we become a leader, success is all about growing others. It’s about making the people who work for us smarter, bigger, and bolder. Nothing we do anymore as an individual matters, except how we nurture and support our team and help our members increase their self-confidence. We will get our share of attention from above, but only in as much as our team wins. To describe the other way around, our success as a leader will come not from what we do every day, but from the reflected glory of our team’s performance.

From the ranks, promoted to be a team leader, is a big transition. It’s hard. No doubt about that. Being a leader basically requires a whole new mind-set, one that is constantly not thinking “How can I stand-out”? But is thinking “How can I help my people do their jobs better”?

Sometimes that mind-set requires undoing a couple of decades of momentum. After all, we may have probably spent our entire life, starting in in grade school and continuing through our last job, as an individual contributor, excelling at “raising our hand.”

But the good news is, we were probably promoted because someone above in the organization believes we have the stuff to make the leap from star player to a successful coach.

That leap actually involve actively mentoring people. Giving feedback at every opportunity, not just annual or semi-annual. We should talk to our people about their performance after meetings, presentations, or visits to clients. Make every significant event a teaching moment, discussing with them what we like about what they are and doing ways they can improve. There is no need to sugarcoat our exchanges, use a total candor which happens incidentally to be one of the defining characteristics of effective leaders.

Getting into the skin of our people is another way of growing others. Exude positive energy about life and the work that we are doing together, show optimism about our future, and care. Care passionately about each person’s performance and progress. Our energy will energize those around us.

Being a leader, it’s not about us anymore. It’s about them.

 

Leaders: Born or Made?

 

The question whether leaders are born or made is rational. Tucker for a good classroom or a dinner party debate.

So the answer of course we are talking about real life here, is not so simple. But in fact, some leadership traits are inborn, while on the other hand, some key leadership traits can be developed with training and experience (a must!).

Before we answer the question, let us enumerate the traits of being a leader. Integrity is a requirement, while intelligence is a ticket in today’s challenges and emotional maturity. These three characteristics are standard, meaning they should be “givens”.

The first essential trait of leadership is he must possess a positive energy, the capacity to endure with a healthy vigor and an optimistic approach through good times and bad.

Second would be the ability to energize others, releasing their positive energy, to reach new altitudes as a team.

Next trait would be the edge, or the ability to make tough calls, to say yes or no, not maybe.

Fourth trait is the ability to execute. To get things done.

Finally, leaders have passion. They care, deeply; they work, hard; they believe, wholeheartedly.

Positive energy and ability to energize others are hardwired. Basically, personalities. The same as passion. All of them are inborn. Some people naturally loaded with intensity and curiosity, for they naturally love people, life, and work. It is in them. It is them.

Edge and the ability to execute are different. They can be learned. Trench warfare is the best teacher for these two traits, for they are largely a function of self-confidence. You can say yes or no a lot better when you have done it a number of times and seen how well decisiveness works. Likewise, only the real-world challenges can leaders truly feel the power of moving quickly, demanding accountability, and rewarding results. They can say from their experience how damaging it is not to execute – a mistake effective leaders don’t make twice.

So, are leaders born or made? The answer is both.

Always remember, that not everyone was meant to be a leader. But as long as you are one yourself, it is your job to find and build those who can be.
